The tender for the design of the Shuttle linking the national railway network and the Salento airport in Brindisi was assigned to Techproject. The tender for the executive design was concluded, but above all for the execution of the works of the 40 million euro project, which will strengthen and make multimodal the axis between the Brindisi airport and the rest of Salento, ensuring absolute certainty on travel times and offering tourists the possibility of a possible stop in the city, for a quick tour of the historic center and the port thanks to the “Circular of the sea”. Total price, including bid amount, security charges, supply of vehicles and design costs: 20 million and 860 thousand euros. The purpose of the work is to create a fast, road service that connects the national railway network, through the new little station next to the Perrino hospital (recently completed), with the Salento airport, allowing for faster travel from the three provinces Salento and the rest of Italy and Europe. Starting from Lecce or Taranto, in fact, passengers can easily reach the small railway station (from Taranto directly, from Lecce with a short stop from the central station). From here, a particular type of methane bus will depart – the Brt, Bus Rapid Transport, a vehicle that moves almost exclusively on roads or reserved lanes, with very few stops and maintaining an average speed very close to that of rail systems – moving partly on dedicated lanes, and partly on the roads destined for other vehicles. The bus will pass on the Pittachi road and then follow the only stretch of road to be built ex novo, behind the Torretta area, to then reach the Salento airport. The shuttle, in addition to the Perrino station, will have two stops. The first – on call, to reduce travel times – at the mouth of the Cillarese, from where it will be possible to use the “Circular of the sea” service to reach the center by boat, the Casale, the Seno di Levante and in the future also the Fontanelle area and the Alfonsino Castle. The third, the terminus, at the airport. Total duration of the race: eight minutes from the start to the end of the journey. A very short time in order to guarantee the arrival in tranquility at the airport and avoid – this is the idea behind the project – the use of the private car for that type of movement from the Salento area. In fact, from the statistical studies carried out, it was discovered that 84 percent of Salento’s passengers reach the airport by car. A modality that will become unsustainable if the airport continues with its growth trend also in the coming years.
