Falconara bridge and viaduct over the Esino river

The need to build a link road between the Adriatic line and the Orte-Falconara line on the north side has always been considered strategic in order to avoid the operation of trains in the Falconara Marittima station with considerable loss of time and use of resources . The lack of this alternative, together with the insufficient capacity and potential of the Orte-Falconara line, has also prevented the development of this line as an alternative freight route for transport between the south-west sector and the north-east sector of the Italy. The interconnection between the Orte-Falconara line and the Adriatic line plays an important role as it allows to simplify the direct connection between the Adriatic and Tyrrhenian coastlines by overcoming the Falconara Node. This direct communication on the north side is in fact the welding element of the RFI network which makes it possible to activate a second link between Rome and the northern regions as an alternative to the Milan-Rome ridge. The advantage in terms of global travel times of trains coming from or heading north, after completion, will be around 30 minutes. The alternative route to the Milan-Rome ridge that will be activated, uses the Orte-Falconara line, with a total length of approximately 204 km, which, in addition to being the backbone of the Umbro-Marchigiano railway system, constitutes also one of the fundamental transversal ones of the national railway network recognized as strategic since the national transport plan of 1986. The construction of the work is part of the broader strategy of doubling the Orte-Falconara line than for a part (72 km equal to about 35% of the total) has already been built, for another part (about 20 km) it is under construction and the rest is being planned.
